Demanding Truth, Justice and Accountability in Government

We Will Not Let the Dream of Our Founding Fathers Die in a Neocon Ditch

Rusty

The Senate Judiciary Committee conducted a great hearing today, and gave Alberto Gonzalez and his BushCo pals a blistering preview of what's coming their way the next few months. Chairman Patrick Leahy issued a
press release today echoing what progressives across the Netroots have been saying about this criminal administration.

Here are some highlights:

"I have never seen a time when our Constitution and fundamental rights as Americans were more threatened by their own government. Just this last weekend, the President and Vice President indicated that they intended to override the will of the American people, as expressed in the most recent national elections, and ignore actions of Congress in order to escalate the war in Iraq."

"This Administration has circumvented express congressional prohibitions on creating databanks of information on law-abiding Americans over the last five years."

"For years, this Administration has engaged in warrantless wiretapping of Americans contrary to the law."

"The President has issued signing statement after signing statement declaring the law to be not what Congress passed and he has signed, but what he finds convenient."

"This Justice Department has been complicit in advancing these government policies which threaten our basic liberties and overstep the bounds of our Constitution."

"The Department has also played a pivotal role in eroding basic human rights and undercutting America’s leading role as an advocate for human rights throughout the world."

"We have a democratic government in which Congress is entitled to know and review government actions. The President and Vice President of the United States should not be operating a secret and separate regime in which their official acts and policies cannot be known by the people’s elected representatives."

"And, after the Administration and the Republican-led Congress eviscerated the Great Writ of habeas corpus -- not just for detainees but for millions of permanent residents living in the United States -- this Department of Justice filed a legal brief expressly supporting that result, raising the specter that millions living in the United States today can now be subjected to indefinite government detention."

Chairman Leahy identified multiple violations of our Constitution and our laws by this criminal president, his criminal "attorney general" and that crime syndicate they've infested throughout the entire executive branch of the federal government.

This is just an indictment in the press, but it's a good start, and so was today's hearing.

We all know what has to be done next, and it damn well better be done. Subpeonas, multiple ongoing hearings in the House and Senate, criminal indictments, criminal prosecutions, criminal convictions, Impeachment hearings, Impeachment of Bush and Cheney, and Senate convictions.

We have to help make this happen, we have to contact our congressmen and senators regularly and keep the heat on them. Write LTE's, support progressive activist groups working hard for Impeachment, call radio talk shows, talk to friends and neighbors.

Many of us have doubts Congress will do anything other than just talk and pass a few bills Bush will ignore, many of us are cynical, we have a right to be.

But cynicism is the reason America is in this nightmare in the first place. Too many Americans quit caring, too many Americans gave up and said to hell with it, the government is going to do whatever it wants no matter what.

I will never quit caring. I will never give up. I will never say to hell with it. Neither will anyone on this blog. Neither will any of the millions of progressives across this country who believe in America like we do, and will not let the dream of our Founding Fathers die in a neocon ditch.

Cynicism didn't kick the asses of 6 RePug "senators" and 30 RePug "representatives" out of "Congress" two months ago, IDEALISM did. Our idealism, our hard work, our faith in each other and love for America hammered Rove's vaunted electoral juggernaut into a pile of twisted wreckage. That same idealism, that same faith in ourselves, love for each other, and determination to redeem America are needed now even more than they were during the midterm election campaign.

We won that fight.

We'll win this fight.

IMPEACH!
