Congressional Oversight Hearings Underway
Rusty
On January 30, Chairman John Conyers Jr. held a House Judiciary Committee hearing about The Decider’s signing statements and delivered a fiery opening statement condemning Bush’s abuses of power and vowing aggressive action. On February 1, Conyers informed Gonzo that he is demanding full House Judiciary Committee access to warrantless surveillance documents, and warned Bush’s head stooge at the Injustice Department that, “it is imperative that all members of the Judiciary Committee have access to them so that members may perform their oversight function under the law. There is little point in allowing only the Chair and Ranking Member to review these materials, when it is the entire committee that has oversight responsibility.”
Today, the Democratic Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), stated that, "Our Committee plans an aggressive series of hearings over the coming weeks to address the intelligence challenges in Iraq. We will scrutinize the conclusions reached by the Intelligence Community and seek to understand whether we are fielding the best intelligence capability."
As Raw Story reports, Chairman Reyes called “the four-month delay of the release of the National Intelligence Estimate ‘unacceptable,’ and “contradicted a key White House claim about the basis for his "New Way Forward in Iraq. Unfortunately for the troops he is now sending into harm’s way, the President’s plan was developed without the benefit of a fully vetted National Intelligence Estimate.”
As we all know, The Decider doesn’t HAVE a plan, which is why Senator Feingold has introduced a resolution based upon a Real PLAN mandating the withdrawal of American troops from Bush’s illegal fiasco of a war. Unlike the babbling alcoholic currently in charge of DeciderLand, Senator Feingold lives in the real world with the rest of us and is determined to take Bush’s bloody checkbook away. He recognizes that non-binding resolutions are useless, symbolism is not going to stop the killing of our soldiers, only cutting off funding for this PNAC bloodbath can do that.
On Daily Kos, Senator Feingold warned that the Levin-Warner non-binding resolution, “doesn’t fix the administration’s failed Iraq policy – it just takes us back to where we were before the escalation.” He is imploring his fellow senators to take a stand at long last and urging Americans across this country to call their senators and demand withdrawal this year. “We have the support of a majority of Americans behind us” he reminded his fellow Democrats, “we should recognize that and act on it.”
On February 6, Chairman Leahy and the Senate Judiciary Committee will be holding a hearing on the firing of U.S. attorneys by Gonzo, and on that same day, Chairman Waxman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is hauling Paul Bremer in under oath to explain why 9 billion dollars in Iraq reconstruction funds disappeared.
Drain the swamp, Democrats. Drain it quickly.
