The corporate fascism of Bush and the Republican Party has been chillingly described by Michael C. Ruppert in By the Light of a Burning Bridge. BushCo “is the cause of ever-expanding wars (covert and overt), carnage, suffering, and political and economic exploitation—even within its own borders against its own people—that fill our corporate-issued headlines and TV shows. The US economy, the privately-owned Federal Reserve system, and the government which they operate like a franchise are the greatest enemies of the entire human race and especially the rapidly-deteriorating and fragile ecosystem which supports all life.”
In Missouri and Kansas, citizen activists are showing the rest of America how to confront Republican corporate fascist tyranny in their own communities. On August 18, the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and Western Missouri and the ACLU of Eastern Missouri filed a lawsuit challenging Republican voter suppression, disguised as a “law” that requires Missouri’s voters to present state-issued photo identification cards at the polls in order to be eligible to vote. The Constitution of the United States begins with the stirring words, “We the People”, it does not begin with, “We the People with photo ID’s.” Our Constitution was written, “in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.” But since 2000, in their frenzied pursuit of absolute power, Republicans and their village idiot president have demonstrated nothing but contempt for these cherished ideals expressed in our Constitution.
For more than two centuries, Americans of all political parties have honored our Constitution. At times, their respective political agendas have made them bitter enemies, but even in times of partisan bitterness, global war, and economic crisis, they have shared one thing in common—respect for the Constitution. Republicans have betrayed that long tradition, for respecting the Constitution guarantees a thriving democracy, and a thriving democracy is the greatest threat to their corporate fascist power.
“By the Light of a Burning Bridge” was Michael C. Ruppert’s farewell to America. Brutalized and forced into foreign exile by BushCo thugs, he can no longer fight against Republican corporate fascist tyranny from the land of his birth. But we can. Citizen activists in Missouri and Kansas are showing us how to take our country back. The ACLU is showing us how. MoveOn.org is showing us how. Howard Dean is showing us how. Ned Lamont and Jim Webb and Al Gore and John Conyers and Russ Feingold are showing us how.
On Concord Bridge in 1775, citizen activists fired a shot for democracy heard around the world. It’s our turn. Lock and load, progressives activists! The Netroots keeps us readily supplied with ammunition. Let’s use that ammunition. Let’s use it all.
