The Darkest of Times

It seems like we are living in the darkest of times. The people of our nation appear to be enshrouded in darkness - unable to see the dangers of our present situation.

We cry out, but we wonder if we are really being heard.

We look for strong political leadership in this battle against darkness, but it seems none are really willing to stand up and fight.

At times we feel so overwhelmed and alone.

But there is a precedent for our times - an example from ancient history that can serve to encourage us if we will allow it!

Those who spoke out against evils in Bible times were called prophets. Often they were ridiculed, mocked and ignored. At other times they endured great suffering for speaking the truth.

The prophet Jeremiah, frustrated by such rejection and persecution, complained:

"I am a laughingstock all the time; everyone ridicules me... If I say; I won't mention Him or speak any longer in His name, His message becomes like a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones. I become tired of holding it in, indeed I cannot." (Jeremiah 20:7,9)

Many of us never intended to be outspoken or "political", but the sad state of affairs in our nation has stirred our hearts to action! It has grown so bad that we just can't keep quiet!

The prophet Amos seems to have had a window into our time, as though he were looking at our nation right now - as though he saw frustrated people like you and me. Here is what he said:

"You people hate anyone who challenges injustice and speaks the whole truth. You have oppressed the poor and robbed them... I know how terrible your sins are and how many crimes you have committed. You persecute good people, take bribes, and prevent the poor from getting justice in the courts. And so, keeping quiet in such evil times seems the smart thing to do!" (Amos 5:10-13)

Keeping quiet seems the like the smart thing to do?

Well our leaders would like us to think that way!

I've heard people say, "If you're smart, you'll just keep quiet, before you get yourself into alot of trouble."

And it can be tempting to feel that way when it seems like our words are falling on deaf ears - when it seems like our words are having no effect - when it feels like we are all alone - when we are called names and threatened.

Sometimes it seems like it would just be so much easier to be quiet.

But wait! Here we are, several thousand years beyond the time of Jeremiah - and his words are still being quoted and held in high esteem!

His messages against injustice, falsehood, greed, and oppression still ring true for today!

Jeremiah went through all kinds of grief, but he lived to see his words vindicated!

My fellow liberal bloggers, you have been a strong voice for the truth! You have spoken like many prophets against the injustices of this government! Your words HAVE NOT gone unnoticed or been without effect!

I feel that these following words from long ago speak exactly to our situation today - and that they should be encouragement for those of us who have been speaking out and who long for justice to prevail:

"Write down clearly on tablets what I reveal to you, so that it can be read at a glance. Put it in writing, because it is not yet time for it to come true. But the time is coming quickly, and what I show you will come true. It may seem slow in coming, but wait for it; it will certainly take place, and it will not be delayed.

And this is the message:

"As for the man of pride, my soul has no pleasure in him; but the upright man will have life through his good faith.

Wealth is deceitful. Greedy people are proud and restless---like death itself they are never satisfied.

That is why they conquer nation after nation for themselves.”

But they will be mocked with these words:

“You're doomed! You stored up stolen goods and cheated others of what belonged to them.

But without warning, those you owe will demand payment.
Then you will become a frightened victim.

You robbed cities and nations everywhere on earth and murdered their people.

Now those who survived will be as cruel to you.

You're doomed!

You made your family rich at the expense of others.

You even said to yourself, "I'm above the law.”

But you will bring shame on your family and ruin to yourself for what you did to others." (Habbakuk 2:2-10)

Let's claim those words for our situation today! Let's take heart! It may seem really dark, but it's always darkest right before dawn!

Let's continue to dream and hope and work for the best! And who knows - when we wake up on November 8th, our dreams may be reality!

This "War on Terror" of BushCo's is straight out of Orwell's 1984. We are living in the real world nightmare Orwell predicted in his novel, and if anyone has the slightest doubt about that, they have not been paying attention. Thank you, Frosty, your article will be featured the rest of the week.
