Impeachment, We Need to Learn From the Past
Reed31463
Impeachment is not limited to the president and must be used in order to permanently remove this cabal. If Democratic leaders fail to address the impeachment issue then they will in effect shelve Congress's only true Constitutional check on Judicial and Executive power.
Unfortunately today, Impeachment is largely misunderstood. I believe the best way to educate the voters on the impeachment process is to draw the parallel between Grand Jury proceedings and the Impeachment process. Gaskells Political Dictionary defines impeachment thus: Impeachment. Any officer who abuses his authority, is liable to impeachment. The lower house acts as grand jury, the upper, as petit jury. The great political excitement incident to reconstruction culminated in the impeachment of Andrew Johnson in 1868. Articles of impeachment were agreed upon March 3, and presented to the Senate two days later. The trial began March 23, Chief-Justice Chase presiding. The specific charge was the removal of the Secretary of War, Stanton, in violation of the tenure of office act. After a long and exciting trial, he was acquitted, a few Republican Senators voting with the Democrats for acquittal. Many of the individuals who are complicit with war crimes were also guilty and involved in Iran-Contra. Hypothetically, if these guilty individuals were impeached back then, they would not be in power in the government today. Hence, these individuals would not be the problem they are today.
We must learn from the past. If we again fail to impeach these individuals, we only invite history to repeat itself again.
Comment # 1 ~ Patriot ~ 09/24/2006 08:14 GMT Chavez's statement to the U.N. is evidence of the hatred that much of the world feels toward America and it's shameful. Our country used to be admired and respected, now we're scorned as the enemy of soverign nations.
Comment # 2 ~ tahoebasha1 ~ 09/24/2006 17:25 GMT Karl, the damage that has been caused these United States over the past six years by this regime to our once, respected, honored and trusted place as a nation amongst nations is almost unbelievable. It will take years and years, if at all possible, to restore trust, respectability and honorableness to these United States by the nations of the world. The damage to American citizens and citizens of the world is devastating and heartbreaking.
Comment # 3 ~ keenekarl ~ 09/24/2006 18:21 GMT Chavez' speech at the UN the other day really supports I heartily recommend that everyone read the speech that Hugo Chavez made at the UN the other day. You can do so by following this link: http://www.newsmax.com/scripts/printer_friendly.pl?page=http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2006/9/20/123752.shtml
It is not some pipe-dream of mine that nations are aligning themselves against the US! Our leaders do us great harm to underestimate Chavez and the 100+ nations of the Non-aligned movement!
You can link to info on the non-aligned movement here: http://www.nam.gov.za/background/members.htm
We need to elect a government that will listen to the concerns of the nations around us - unlike Bush & Co, who publicly ridicule and ignore them.
Comment # 4 ~ keenekarl ~ 09/24/2006 18:38 GMT Some of my words got cut out from my last post. What I meant to say was:
"Chavez' speech at the UN the other day really supports the fact that many nations of the world are becoming allied in their hatred and disgust over the imperialistic aggressions and violations of human rights being perpetrated by the United States government."
